El Códice del Peregrino / The Pilgrim Codex

Completely up to date with recent news, with a faithful depiction of the facts of the real-life theft of the Codex Calixtinus.

Rigorously researched. José Luis Corral is a master of believable realism.

Diego and Patricia, two ‘professional’ art smugglers, are hired by Jacques Roman, a French millionaire, to do a special job: to steal the Codex Calixtinus, a 12th Century illuminated manuscript kept in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, whose story and allure have been attracting pilgrims for over a thousand years.

In spite of the Codex’s economic and historical value, the Cathedral’s security arrangements are minimal and Diego and Patricia carry out the job with little difficulty. But the Codex is much more than a guide for pilgrims. Hidden in its pages by a medieval technique is the Gospel of Saint James the Elder, one of Jesus’ favourite disciples. It reveals information about Jesus’ genealogy which could destroy the faith of every Christian with its contradictions of the Christian creed: it denies the divinity of Jesus Christ and his eternal union with the Father, it denies the Holy Trinity and the Virginity of Mary and, as if that weren’t enough, claims that Mary is the mother of a line of men and women from the same bloodline as Jesus.

To the Vatican, this gospel is a harbinger of the Apocalypse and it will use all its money and power to destroy it definitively.
