In spring 1491 the Jewish council of elders in a city in the north of Spain receives a secret message informing them of the imminent edict exiling the Jews, signed by the Catholic Monarchs on the urging of the Grand Inquisitor Torquemada.
Benavides, the head of the council, knows that this means they will have to leave Sefarad as soon as possible: after the edict, their lives and property will be worthless. Helped by his friend, the Kabbalah master Abravanel, he comes up with an escape plan for the whole community. Part of it involves teaching their respective sons Aviraz and Isaac to decipher coded messages hidden in sacred books. Only Benavides and Abravanel will know all the details of the flight so as to avoid danger if one of them is captured. However, Aviraz shares some of the codes and messages with Telat, Isaac’s younger sister, with whom he is in love. It is the only way for her to find him because the young man will not be leaving with the community, instead he must decipher Benavides’ messages and take the difficult Saint’s Path to find Jacob’s Stone.
