Ilya U. Topper (Almería, 1972) lives in Istanbul, where he works for the EFE agency. Raised in Morocco, Topper began his career as a journalist in Cadiz in 1994 and worked as a freelancer in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Morocco, Israel, Uzbekistan, and other countries. Between 2005 and 2008, he directed the International section of the weekly La Clave and in 2009 founded the digital magazine M’Sur, which he continues to head. In 2010 he became a correspondent for El Mundo in Istanbul and in 2011 for EFE. He has published the poetry collection Years Adrift (2001), winter of the Andalusian José Manuel García Gómez Prize. In 2017 he was a finalist for the XXXIII Cirilo Rodríguez Journalism Prize. Topper speaks Turkish, Arabic, German, English French, and Portuguese.
