In the autumn of 1878 the French painter Paul Ratier, whose deafness has helped him to develop an incredible sensibility, is hired by Marcelino Sáenz de Sautuola to copy some cave paintings discovered in Altamira. Ratier, a disciple of Delacroix, believes that these images of bisons bear all the hallmarks of a masterpiece. As his work goes on, he begins a friendship that will be put to the test during the tough times when the authenticity of the paintings was questioned by the scientific community led by the proud, eminent figure of Émile de Cartailhac.
