The sources on hand when I came to write this novel were abundant. Aside from the historical records up to 1933 and beyond, my research has been complemented by interviews with survivors who had first-hand experience of the search for the Holy Grail. They confirmed that the much reported interest of the Nazi leaders to locate the holy receptacle, which contained the wine sipped by Jesus at the last supper, is not a myth. It was, in fact, an obsession. When I began to research the facts behind Operation Alarico in detail I came across a wall of silence, still active to this day. I have managed to confirm that during Heinrich Himmler’s trip to Barcelona on October 23rd, 1940, the Nazi leader became convinced that the holiest of relics was hidden somewhere in the library of the abbey at Montserrat, and decided that he would not stop at anything to locate it and take it back to Germany.
